Valheim Biomes
Identify every current biome, understand its defining threats and resources, and prepare for hazardous expeditions and recovery runs.
Biome progression at a glance
The current biome directory covers Meadows, Black Forest, Ocean, Swamp, Mountain, Plains, Mistlands, Ashlands, and Deep North; the world map list also names World Edge.
Biomes have distinct environments, creatures, and resources, and almost every biome is associated with one of the Forsaken. Exploration can therefore lead to different materials and dangerous enemies as you sail into unknown lands.
Each world is generated from a seed, and the same seed produces the same layout for a given game version. Use the in-game map to label points of interest and plan return journeys instead of assuming every world follows one fixed route.
Meadows is the starting biome, with Birch, Beech, and Oak trees and low-level creatures. Black Forest is a darker, more hostile forest containing Fir, Pine, Corewood, Tin, and Copper.
Ocean occupies deep water off the coast and contains Leviathans and Sea Serpents. Swamp has shallow water, Leeches, Draugr-filled Crypts, and poisonous Blobs.
Mountain consists of tall frozen terrain populated by Wolves and flying Drakes. Plains has golden grass along with Fulings, Lox, and Deathsquitoes.
Mistlands combines dense fog, rocky terrain, Yggdrasil shoots, Hares, Dvergrs, and hostile Seekers. Ashlands occupies the southern edge, where lava and armies of Charred skeletons define the fiery interior. Deep North occupies the northern edge, with snowy hills, forests, frozen rivers, Moose, Elaking, and Gammeltrolls.
Preparing for the dangerous biomes
- How should I prepare for the Swamp and Bonemass?
- Bonemass is the third boss. Swamp rain continuously applies Wet, so enter with the Rested effect, strong food, and careful stamina management; walk when running is unnecessary. An approximately 18-minute Rested timer is attainable at this stage. Bring Poison resistance mead for Blobs, Oozers, and Leeches until you have a Root mask.
- What protects me in the Mountains?
- After Bonemass, use the Wishbone to locate hidden silver in a large, high-elevation Mountain. Prevent freezing damage with Frost resistance mead, a Wolf fur cape, or a Wolf chest. Bring strong food and a bow with arrows for Drakes, and preserve stamina while climbing so you do not fall. Moder is the fourth boss.
- How do I see clearly and recover gear in Mistlands?
- Use Yagluth's Torn spirits to build a Wisp fountain in any biome; it attracts wisps at night or during rain. Craft a Wisplight to clear nearby mist or Wisp torches for larger areas. Because a Wisplight drops when you die, be ready to craft another for the corpse run.
- What should I bring for an Ashlands landing?
- Travel in a Drakkar, the boat that will not boil up during the approach. Bring preferably upgraded Mistlands gear, fire-resistance potions, healing and stamina meads, and portal materials. Place the portal as soon as you reach land; if you establish an outpost, build it from stone because wood catches fire.
- What hazards affect a Deep North landing?
- Deep North is separated from other biomes by Ocean and borders World Edge to the north. Although its sea does not boil, Fader must still be defeated to progress through the biome. Watch for strong enemies and floating shoreline ice while docking, and use frost-resistant clothing or Frost resistance mead during damaging snowstorms.
