Valheim Gameplay

Learn the opening gather-build-explore-fight loop, establish a functional shelter, and recognize the boss rewards and hazards that shape progression.

01

The opening loop and progression path

Start by scouting the Meadows, gathering wood and stone, and building a covered Workbench for crafting and repairs. Keep a lit, ventilated campfire near the bed, mark useful locations on the map, and choose weapons around damage type, range, attack speed, and stamina cost.

Progression follows boss rewards: Eikthyr enables the Antler pickaxe for ore, The Elder grants the Swamp Key for crypt access and scrap iron, Bonemass provides the Wishbone for Mountain silver, and Moder's Dragon tears enable the Artisan table and Plains processing. Treat entry into the Ashlands as a preparation checkpoint.

Recognize hazards before they end an expedition: falling trees are especially dangerous in the Meadows, trapped smoke damages you, the constantly Wet Swamp strains stamina, and Mountain freezing deals ongoing damage without frost protection.

From the Sacrificial Stones to later biomes

  1. Begin in the Meadows at the Sacrificial Stones with a Rag tunic, and follow Hugin's guidance as the opening route develops.
  2. Run the coastline to understand the land before choosing a first camp. Gather berries and mushrooms for food while scouting; an early death carries very little level loss.
  3. Pick up branches or punch small trees for Wood, and collect small rocks from the ground for Stone.
  4. Craft a Stone axe from wood and stone. Use it against Greylings and Boars and to cut trees faster, while staying clear of falling trunks and nearby biome borders.
  5. Mark points of interest with labels on the map. If you encounter a rare two-star boar, consider trapping and preserving it for later taming and breeding.
  6. Craft a Hammer and place a Workbench. Add walls and a roof before crafting or repairing there; covering is not required merely to place building pieces.
  7. Place a wood-fueled Campfire near the bed for sleeping. Keep it off wood floors, ventilate smoke, and roof the fire so rain does not extinguish it.
  8. Match weapon damage to enemy resistance, then compare melee reach, speed, stamina cost, and secondary attacks. For ranged combat, carry arrows and reserve stamina to charge bow shots for greater range and damage.
  9. Defeat Eikthyr for antler pieces and the Antler pickaxe, then defeat The Elder for the Swamp Key, Bonemass for the Wishbone, and Moder for Dragon tears and Artisan-table access.
  10. Enter the Swamp with the Rested effect and manage stamina carefully because the biome is always rainy and Wet. Enter the Mountains with Frost resistance mead, a Wolf fur cape, or a Wolf chest to prevent lethal freezing.
  11. Complete preparation before entering the Ashlands rather than treating arrival as an unplanned extension of the previous expedition.
